The revival of the Malawi Tourism Industry Awards is being hailed as a turning point for the country’s tourism sector, as stakeholders prepare for a grand celebration of excellence after a one-year pause.

According to the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC), the 2025 edition of the awards is not only about honoring outstanding individuals, entrepreneurs, and influencers, but also about positioning Malawi as a competitive tourism destination on the global map.

MTC Executive Director, Memory Momba Kanthunzi, stressed that the event is designed to inspire innovation and professionalism within the sector, while also motivating players to uphold the highest standards.


Board Member, Tonderai Banda, echoed the sentiment, noting that the awards have the potential to boost Malawi’s tourism image internationally by showcasing talent and creativity.

“This is more than an awards show it’s a platform to amplify Malawi’s voice in the global tourism conversation,” Banda remarked.

With nominations opening on September 1 and the glittering ceremony scheduled for November 29 in Blantyre, the awards are expected to inject renewed energy into the industry and reinforce Malawi’s standing as the “Warm Heart of Africa.”

1.7 Million Malawians set to benefit from new climate-health project

Over 1.7 million Malawians are expected to gain better protection against climate-related health threats following the launch of a five-year initiative by the Ministry of Health.

The project, which will be rolled out in six climate-vulnerable districts Mangochi, Machinga, Balaka, Ntcheu, Phalombe, and Zomba aims to safeguard groups most at risk, including children under five, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and households struggling with chronic poverty.

Deputy Minister of Health, Noah Chimpeni, said the programme is designed to make Malawi’s health system more resilient in the face of rising climate pressures such as extreme weather, food insecurity, and disease outbreaks.


The initiative is funded by the Green Climate Fund and the Sanofi Foundation, and will be jointly implemented by the Government of Malawi in collaboration with Save the Children, the Catholic Health Commission, and CRECCOM.

Save the Children’s Country Director for Malawi and Zimbabwe, Bhekimpilo Khanye, emphasized that the fight against climate change cannot be won by government alone, urging civil society, development partners, and communities to play an active role in finding sustainable solutions.

Officials say the project reflects growing recognition that climate change is not just an environmental issue, but a health crisis that requires urgent and coordinated action.

Malawi Police Commission promotes 345 officers nationwide

The Malawi Police Service Commission has promoted 345 police officers to higher ranks in its latest round of staff restructuring.

Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed the development, stating that 67 of the promoted officers are in senior positions while 278 are junior officers.

He explained that the move was necessary to fill gaps left after previous promotions conducted earlier this year.

Kalaya added that the promotions are expected to boost morale among officers and improve efficiency in service delivery.

“The Malawi Police Service is an independent institution, and these promotions are purely based on organizational needs. They have nothing to do with the upcoming elections,” he said.

Recently, the commission also elevated more than 3,000 officers, signaling what authorities describe as a continued effort to strengthen the operational capacity of the police nationwide.

Blue Eagles FC have confirmed the departure of their long-serving goalkeeper, Joshua Waka, who has completed a permanent transfer to Ekhaya FC after both clubs reached an agreement.

The move ends Waka’s five-year stay with the Eagles, where he became a key figure in the squad and one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in the TNM Super League.

Club officials described the 28-year-old as a player who combined talent, discipline, and leadership, making him a dependable presence between the posts.

Waka’s commanding displays were vital in the Eagles’ recent strong campaigns, where the team consistently challenged for top-four spots and remained competitive in domestic cup tournaments.
