The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has donated 5 000 bags of maize flour worth K200 million to Mangochi Municipal Council to be distributed to people who were affected by flash floods along the shores of Lake Malawi and Shire River in the district.

The donation follows the request by the people in the district following rising water levels in Lake Malawi and Shire River that submerged their houses.

MAGLA Director General(DG) Rachel Mijiga

Speaking after presenting the relief food on Thursday at Mangochi Stadium, MAGLA Director General(DG) Rachel Mijiga said their aim is to relieve the victims’ pain following their condition.

“As Magla we received a request from people of Mangochi, especially those that have been affected by the flash floods that damaged their crops and property.

“We came today with this donation so that the council can give the people in the affected areas from around the town, all the way to Cape Maclear to mitigate their suffering,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mapira thanked MAGLA for the timely donation, saying the relief food will cushion the suffering of the people.

“I thank Magla for the relief flour. My subjects are currently experiencing a difficult life. Their houses were damaged and they lost property including food. Now, to have organisations like Magla, is a blessing,” he said.

Mapira, however, expressed worry with some people’s negative reactions to deny the food due to other demands, saying such people are unwelcome to the society.

“I am very disappointed to learn that there are some people who do not want to receive the food due to other demands such as aligning this issue to Kamuzu Barrage. These people are bad,” he said.

MAGLA is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament.

It is charged with the responsibility of licensing of Gaming and Lotteries.

It has the power to regulate all gaming and lottery activities in the country and to undertake some ancillary and operational functions associated with these principal
roles.

The Authority was formed from a merger between Malawi Gaming Board (MGB) and National Lotteries Board (NRB).

Its mission is to regulate the Gaming and Lotteries industry to promote a positive social economic impact.
