Concerns are mounting over the planned opposition-led demonstrations in Lilongwe today, with reports indicating that certain groups of vendors have been armed to counter protestors. The move has raised fears that the demonstrations, intended to voice grievances over governance, economic issues, and transparency, could turn violent.

Opposition parties and civil society leaders have organized the protests to highlight challenges facing Malawians, but the introduction of armed counter-groups has alarmed many, including organizers and human rights advocates. There are claims that specific forces are backing these vendors, potentially escalating the situation and endangering lives.

The opposition has already spoken out about the potential for violence, with calls for peace and restraint from all sides. “We’re asking everyone involved to remain peaceful,” said a representative from the coalition organizing the protests. “These demonstrations are about voicing the will of the people, not about confrontation or violence. But when groups are armed, the risk of escalation is always high.”

In response to the situation, Lilongwe law enforcement officials have increased their presence around key areas of the city. The Malawi Police Service has indicated that it will deploy additional personnel to ensure the safety of both demonstrators and residents, though critics worry that the measures may be insufficient if violence breaks out.

The presence of armed vendors has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with citizens and commentators condemning any attempts to disrupt peaceful protests. Political analysts have also warned that violence could deepen existing divisions and jeopardize the nation’s stability at a time when public frustration is already at a peak.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, November 12, Shadric Namalomba, the Presidential Spokesperson and National Publicity Secretary for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), made a firm statement regarding the party’s stance on recent remarks made by one of its commissioners Francis Kasaila. Namalomba expressed the party’s dissatisfaction with the commissioner, who had publicly stated that he saw no issue with the use of the Smartmatic voting system.

Namalomba clarified that the DPP, as an organization, does not endorse this view, particularly in light of ongoing concerns regarding electoral transparency and the integrity of the voting process. He emphasized that the comments made by the commissioner were personal opinions and did not reflect the party’s official position.

The controversy surrounding the Smartmatic system has become a significant topic of debate in Malawi’s political circles. Critics, including opposition parties and civil society groups, have raised alarm over the use of the system, citing fears of potential rigging and manipulation of the electoral process. The DPP, Namalomba stressed, has consistently advocated for a transparent and fair electoral process that ensures all Malawians have confidence in the outcomes.

“This individual’s opinion does not represent the collective views of the DPP,” Namalomba stated unequivocally. “As a party, we are committed to ensuring that the electoral process remains free from any form of compromise. The party does not support any system that could undermine the credibility of our elections.”

The Presidential Spokesperson further assured the public that the DPP would continue to monitor the use of Smartmatic closely and engage in discussions to ensure that the system meets the standards of fairness, transparency, and accuracy required in a democratic society.

The statement comes at a time when political tensions are rising as the nation prepares for upcoming elections. As the debate around Smartmatic intensifies, the DPP’s disavowal of the commissioner’s comments is likely to fuel further discussion about the role of technology in Malawi’s electoral process.

With the public’s trust in the electoral system being a key issue, Namalomba’s remarks serve as a reminder of the DPP’s commitment to advocating for an election process that reflects the will of the people and upholds democratic values. The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) marked a historic milestone in Blantyre with its first graduation ceremony, celebrating the achievements of 113 graduates—the inaugural cohort since the institution’s establishment on May 4, 2021.

The ceremony was graced by President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, who was officially installed as the university’s first Chancellor. The event also welcomed Deputy Minister of Education, Honorable Nancy Chaola Mdooko MP

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, President Chakwera noted, “Only two months ago, I was here for the grand opening of the CREATOR building, and it brings me great joy to return and oversee the graduation of the first cohort of students from Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.” He commended the graduates, highlighting the critical role of KUHeS in enhancing healthcare and education in Malawi.

The President expressed confidence in the graduates’ potential to excel in their future endeavors, stating, “Those of you who have been part of this journey will undoubtedly use your opportunities to give back through service.”

A unique feature of the ceremony was the presentation of the original flying whisk of the late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi’s first President and founder, by the Chendawaka family, led by Honorable Ken Kandodo, MP. The University plans to incorporate this symbolic whisk into future graduations as a way for the Chancellor to bestow blessings on the graduates, symbolizing the elimination of ignorance and honoring Dr. Banda’s legacy in medical training and health care.

In his concluding remarks, President Chakwera urged graduates to strive for impact, confront corruption, and embrace their roles as healthcare patriots. “Rise above the ordinary and aim for greatness; your journey begins today,” he inspired.

Earlier in the program, Vice Chancellor Prof. MacPherson Mallewa urged the graduating class to apply their newly acquired knowledge for the benefit of the community.
