Court to decide on Patricia Kaliati’s bail request amidst supporters braving the rain

Lilongwe, Malawi — As the court prepares to issue a ruling on the bail request for UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, a dedicated group of her supporters has gathered outside, undeterred by the rain currently falling in Lilongwe. The supporters, standing in solidarity, have remained in place awaiting the decision on whether Kaliati will be released on bail.

Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe, who is presiding over the case, has announced that he will deliver his ruling at 4 PM today. Kaliati is facing charges of conspiracy to murder, with allegations involving a plot against President Lazarus Chakwera.



Despite the weather, the strong presence of UTM supporters underscores the public interest and high emotions surrounding this high-profile case. The ruling is expected to draw significant attention, as it will determine whether Kaliati will continue to be held in custody or allowed temporary freedom while awaiting trial.

United Transformation Movement (UTM) Secretary-General Patricia Kaliati, has been charged with conspiracy to assassinate President Lazarus Chakwera.

She is accused of conspiring with two others to do the evil.

Chief Resident Magistrate Roderick Michongwe read out the charges against Kaliati on Monday, who pleaded not guilty.

According to the charges, Kaliati and two others currently at large, Joseph Odala and Frank Chinedu, conspired to assassinate the head of state between March 2024 and June 2024.

She was arrested on Thursday last week in the capital Lilongwe.

Cosoma under fire over royalties ,unfair distribution of royalties , managers told urged to resign within 72 hours

A grouping of Malawian movies producers totaling to three hundred wants Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) board chairperson Chimwemwe Mhango, Executive director Dora Makwinja and distribution manager Shadreck Chimtengo resign for allegedly failing to run the society inclusive of the Malawian movies producers.

The grievances mainly emanates from the recent royalties distribution by COSOMA which according to the aggrieved grouping, they were not recognized making them to suspect some corrupt dealings within the society.

“We are demanding for the three to resign in 72 hours or face demonstrations from Tuesday which will be proceeded to vigil at the  COSOMA  offices,” said Aaron Chambo one of the film producers.

For instance they say, they were told that their movies are not on the Malawi markets hence they are not entittle to blank media levy which they think it’s not true.

They are also surprised with the fact that they have been conducting interface meetings with the society on the issues but nothing changes.

“Enough is enough we have tried all the means to interact in good course but to no avail, now we say time is now to take another step,” Chambo concludes

Bangwe, KB settle for point in a fiery draw at Balaka Stadium

Bangwe All Stars Football Club (FC) failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage as they were held to a 1-all draw against Kamuzu Barracks FC who ended the match with ten men in a fast-paced TNM Super League encounter at Balaka Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Bangwe looked lively during the opening stages of the game but they were silenced in the 6th minute when the visitors broke the deadlock with a beautiful finish by Olson Kanjira who connected well a corner kick taken by his captain Samuel Gundah.

The home side equalized in the 30th minute through Innocent Msowoya who scored from the penalty box after a handball incident in the penalty box.

KB’s captain Samuel Gundah was shown a straight red card in the added minutes of the first half following a foul on Shukuran Goba who was also voted man of the match.

Despite playing against ten men for the whole of the second half, Bangwe were unable to take advantage as KB looked more composed  and they played even better in the second half.

The soldiers had a number scoring opportunities mainly through the towering Olson Kanjira but Bangwe led by Gabihno Daud and Ausman Julias looked more disciplined at the back.

Bangwe on the other hand had a number of scoring opportunities as well through  Richard Lapson, Clever Chikwata and substitute James Msowoya  but KB defence led by Herbert Wayekha,Lloyd Mugala and Hope Namadzunda were equally good to deny the home side victory.

KB goalkeeper Goalkeeper Etcken Sibande also made a number of important saves to ensure that his side which is seventh on the log table leaves Balaka Stadium with a point.

Elsewhere, the Lilongwe derby between league leaders Silver Strikers and Civil Service United ended goalless at Silver Stadium as Mafco FC came from behind to beat bottom placed Baka City 2-1 at Chitowe Stadium.

In Mchinji, Karonga United who were coming from a 1-nil win against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, went on to beat Creck Sporting Club with the same margin courtesy of Blessings Mwalilino’s 79th goal.

Silver Strikers remain top on the log table with 51 points followed by Wanderers who are on second position with 44 points, four points above city rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who are perched on third position with 40 points.

Baka City, Chitipa United and Bangwe All Stars remain in the relegation zone.

Zikhale K6 million football and Netball tournament takes place in Nkhatabay South

The Minister of Homeland Security who is also the legislator for Nkhatabay South has commended the youth in his Constituency for being active and eager to develop their talents. He was speaking at the end of the the Ken Zikhale Ng’oma football and Netball tournament that saw teams compete for a K6 million kwacha mega prize.

During the tournament Medina Stars emerged winners in the football category after beating Hauten by 5 goals to nil. The tournament took place at Tukombo in the district.

In sharing the winnings Medina went home with K1.2 million kwacha while the losing finalists went home with K600 thousand kwacha. Hon Zikhale also made sure that every participating team goes home with a participation price.

In the netball category, Brazil Sisters emerged winners after defeating Tukombo Sisters by 40 to 29

Hon Zikhale said he wa satisfied with how the tournament went on  and that a lot of talent was on display that have the potential to be developed further and get big clubs scouting for them.

Zikhale said it was his wish to follow what President Chakwera wants ,which is to develop sports from the grassroots so that Malawi can produce enormous talent to help the country achieve great things on international scale.
