A delegation from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has arrived at Golden Peacock Hotel to attend a significant conference organized by the Alliance for Democracy (Aford). The delegates are being led by the DPP’s Secretary General, Peter Mukhito, who is spearheading the party’s participation in the event.

This development has attracted attention as the DPP joins Aford in what is expected to be a high-profile meeting, where both parties are expected to discuss matters related to national development and potential collaborations. The presence of the DPP at the Aford conference signals an effort to build relationships between political parties as they navigate Malawi’s current political landscape.

President Lazarus Chakwera has committed K225 million from the proceeds of the 2023 Presidential Charity Initiative Golf Tournament towards the reconstruction of Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje District. The school was severely damaged by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, disrupting the education of 2,494 learners and 33 teachers. Among the affected students are 14 learners with special needs due to visual impairment.

On Wednesday, President Chakwera visited the site to inspect the damaged structures before officially launching the construction of new buildings at a site provided by local community leaders. The project aims to restore educational services for the learners and teachers, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.

During the event, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of education in the country’s long-term development goals, particularly under Enabler #5 of Malawi’s Vision 2063, which focuses on Human Capital Development. He highlighted that initiatives like these are critical in addressing issues within the education sector and enhancing the nation’s ability to build relevant human capacity.

“I am even more resolute to continue with this initiative, for it addresses pertinent issues in the education sector, which is critical in developing the human capacity necessary for Malawi’s long-term development,” Chakwera stated.

The rebuilding of Mpatsa Primary School is expected to significantly benefit the local community and strengthen the education system in Nsanje District, offering hope for recovery after the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy.

Donald Trump Declares He Will Not Debate Kamala Harris Again After Criticism

By Burnett Munthali

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, former President Donald Trump announced that he would not participate in another debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, following widespread criticism of his performance in their most recent encounter. Trump’s decision comes amid intense media scrutiny, as analysts and political commentators had harshly evaluated his showing in the previous debate.

Trump, who has a history of wavering on whether to engage in debates, made his stance clear this time, stating that he had no interest in a third debate. His refusal comes just two days after Harris’ campaign called for another round, hoping to further engage the American public on key issues as the election draws near.

The back-and-forth about participating in debates is not new for Trump, as he has previously flip-flopped on similar occasions during past election cycles. However, this latest declaration signals a final decision, at least for now, as both campaigns prepare for the final stretch before Election Day.

The Harris campaign, eager for another face-off, expressed disappointment but remained focused on its strategy to reach voters through other means. With no third debate on the horizon, attention will now shift to the candidates’ respective rallies, speeches, and media appearances as they continue to court voters across the nation.

The Concerned Citizens of Malawi movement led by Edward Kambanje has written to the Office of the President and Cabinet(OPC), expressing its disapproval of the government’s decision to extend the passport issuance deal with E-Technologies.

The government announced a three-month extension following the expiration of the original six-month contract.

However, in a statement, the movement argues that the decision reflects “elusive and selfish leadership” demonstrated by those entrusted with responsibility.

“Our previous correspondence to your administration highlighted significant issues with the current passport deal.

“We raised concerns about transparency, the exorbitant costs associated with the service, and the overall inefficiency that has plagued the process under the current provider,” reads part of the statement.

The movement claims that the extension was made without consulting relevant stakeholders for a possible solution to the challenges facing passport printing and issuance.

Meanwhile, the movement has demanded that the government rescind its decision.

The government has not yet commented on the issue.

Govt set to reopen ADMARC to address hunger crisis

In a bid to alleviate the worsening hunger crisis gripping the nation, the government has announced the reopening of all Agriculture Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) markets on Friday, September 13, 2024.

To make maize, a Malawi’s staple food, more accessible to the masses, the government has set a new price of K790 per kilogram, equivalent to K39,500 per 50kg bag.

This pricing strategy aims to provide relief to Malawians struggling to afford the current market price of K50,000 per 50kg bag, particularly in areas experiencing critical shortages.

According to Dickxie Kampani, Secretary for Agriculture, the government’s intervention through ADMARC seeks to make this essential commodity more affordable for the majority of households.

“With maize prices skyrocketing in the open market, this move is expected to bring solace to those facing economic hardships,” says Kampani.
