By Burnett Munthali

In a bold live broadcast on October 18, 2024, lawyer Alexius Kamangila addressed concerns about corruption within Malawi’s judiciary, naming judges and lawyers he believes are complicit in unethical practices. His comments have sparked significant discussion among the public, highlighting the urgent need for integrity within the legal system.

During the broadcast, Kamangila specifically mentioned the following judges in the Supreme Court: Justice Chikopa, Justice Madise, and Justice Kapanda. He also expressed serious concerns about Chief Justice Mzikamanda SC, alleging that he is “passively corrupt” and neglects his duties in overseeing the judiciary.

In the High Court, Kamangila pointed out Justice Media and Justice Nyirenda as part of a system he believes is failing to address corruption effectively.

Additionally, Kamangila did not hold back in naming several lawyers he accused of corrupt practices, including Wapona Kita, Frank Mbeta, Edgar Kachere, Steve Kayuni, and Masauko Chamkalala. His claims suggest a pervasive culture of corruption that undermines the legal profession and justice system as a whole.

Kamangila also mentioned judges who, in his view, are not addressing these corruption issues adequately, naming Justice Ivy Kamanga, Justice Dorothy Kamanga, Justice Kachale, and Justice Professor Kapindu. His remarks highlight a growing frustration within the legal community and among the public regarding the lack of accountability and transparency.

This live broadcast has resonated widely, reflecting a broader demand for reform in Malawi’s judiciary. As discussions about corruption and accountability gain momentum, it remains to be seen how the legal community and government officials will respond to Kamangila’s allegations. The integrity of the judiciary is crucial for the rule of law and public trust, and many are calling for immediate action to address these serious concerns.
