Tanzania’s former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has died at the age of 98.
The death of the former head of State was announced by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Mwinyi, who was the second President of Tanzania, was in office between 1985 and 1995. He succeeded the founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
Mwinyi died three months before his 99th birthday.
He was hospitalised on February 24 for chest illness.
Mwinyi
Mr. Mwinyi was 60 when he took over the presidency in 1985 as the handpicked successor of Mr. Nyerere, who had volunteered to step down after governing his country since its beginnings of independent nationhood as Tanganyika in 1961 and its merger with Zanzibar in 1964 to create the state of Tanzania.
Mwinyi removed restrictions on private enterprise and eased bottlenecks on imports, earning the nickname Mzee Rukhsa, a Swahili phrase which loosely translates to Mr. Permission.
Malawi Government through the Ministry of Health has directed an immediate stop to handshaking in the face of the conjunctivitis (pink eye) outbreak.
Malawi’s Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda made the directive on Thursday in Zomba at a press briefing on the outbreak of the disease.
Kandodo said the disease transmits rapidly due to poor hygiene, thereby urging all people to avoid sharing towels, shaking hands, and borrowing sunglasses.
She said there is fear that the disease may spread countrywide if hygiene principles are not adhered to.
Currently, conjunctivitis has hit Karonga, Nkhatabay, Nkhotakota, and Lilongwe districts with over 800 cases.
Some of the signs and symptoms of the disease include pink or red color in the white part of the eye, swelling of the eye lining, increased tear production, itching, eye discharge, painful eye and visual disturbance.
The disease can be prevented through frequent washing of hands with soap and warm water and avoid touching or rubbing eyes, among others.
