A police officer based at Namitete Police Post in Lilongwe has died after being hit by a Scania truck while jogging along the Lilongwe–Mchinji road on Wednesday morning, October 15, 2025.
According to Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Inspector Hestings Chigalu, the deceased has been identified as Sergeant Dumiciano Gumba, aged 25.

The incident occurred at around 05:00 hours when Dave Phiri, 34 years old, was driving a Scania truck, registration number NS 6491, from Mchinji towards Lilongwe.
Upon reaching Takondwa Commodities Macadamia Nuts Farm, Phiri attempted to overtake another vehicle but allegedly lost control of the truck, hitting Sergeant Gumba who was jogging in the same direction.
Following the impact, Gumba sustained a pelvic bone fracture and suffered severe bleeding. He was rushed to St Gabriel Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
The late Sergeant Gumba hailed from Nkangeni Village, under Traditional Authority Mlonyeni in Mchinji District.
Meanwhile, police in Lilongwe have urged all motorists and pedestrians to strictly observe road safety rules to prevent such tragic incidents.
