Tensions escalate: Trump faces backlash from Iran over Easter outburst

By Burnett Munthali

US President Donald Trump’s expletive-laden warning to Iran on Easter Sunday has sparked widespread criticism and a coordinated response from Iranian embassies, which have taken to social media to mock the US leader’s language and policies.

Trump’s post on Truth Social, in which he threatened to unleash “hell” on Iran if the country didn’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz, has been widely condemned as “embarrassing and juvenile” by politicians and commentators across the US.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described Trump’s behavior as that of an “unhinged madman on social media”.

Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, responded to Trump’s threat, stating that the US president’s “reckless moves” were dragging the country into a “living hell” and that the region would “burn” due to Trump’s insistence on following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s commands.

The Iranian embassies’ social media posts have mixed humor, memes, and sharp criticism, with some describing Trump’s language as that of a “teenager” and questioning his representation of the US on the world stage.

The embassies’ responses have been widely shared and praised on social media.

Reports suggest that a 45-day ceasefire could be on the table, although Iran has denied Trump’s claim that the country’s president has requested a ceasefire.

The situation remains volatile, with both sides trading threats and accusations.

The conflict has already resulted in significant damage to civilian infrastructure, with approximately 81,000 sites affected, including homes, medical centers, and schools.

Experts have warned that Trump’s threats could constitute war crimes, as targeting civilian infrastructure is considered a violation of international law.

As the situation continues to unfold, Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Hassan provides the latest updates on the war on Iran, highlighting the need for diplomacy and restraint to prevent further escalation.
