UTM to hold candlelight memorial for Saulos Chilima

By Burnett Munthali

The United Transformation Movement (UTM) has announced that it will hold a candlelight memorial in honor of the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.

The event is scheduled to take place on June 10 in Nsipe, Ntcheu, which is Chilima’s home area.

According to the statement shared by the party, the memorial will involve the lighting of candles as a symbol of remembrance and continued love for the late leader.

UTM has encouraged all Malawians, especially its members and supporters, to participate in this solemn occasion.

The phrase “Pa 10 June tikuyatsa ma candles ku Nsipe, Ntcheu” loosely translates to “On June 10, we will light candles in Nsipe, Ntcheu.”

The decision to organize the candlelight event in Chilima’s home village signifies the party’s strong connection to its fallen leader and his roots.

The late Vice President Saulos Chilima tragically died in a plane crash on June 10, 2024, sending shockwaves across the nation.

This year marks the first anniversary of his untimely death.

As such, the candlelight ceremony is not only a tribute to his life but also an expression of continued grief and solidarity among his followers and loved ones.

Chilima was a founding member and torchbearer of the UTM Party, and his death left a significant void in Malawi’s political landscape.

Party members say his legacy of transformative leadership, youth empowerment, and integrity continues to inspire them.

The June 10 event is expected to draw a large gathering of mourners, political leaders, and ordinary citizens who admired Chilima’s vision and service to the nation.

The UTM has said more details will be announced in the coming days regarding the program and logistics for the memorial.

The event will also offer an opportunity for the community and the party to reflect on Chilima’s contributions and to renew their commitment to the ideals he championed.

As the country continues to mourn the loss of one of its most charismatic leaders, the candlelight vigil at Nsipe will serve as a powerful reminder of the impact he made in his short but impactful political career.
