Eleven students have been injured after a gunman opened fire near İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, Manisa, western Turkey, prompting authorities to launch investigations into the incident and how the firearm was obtained.
Police have arrested a young man suspected of carrying out the shooting.
Authorities said three of the injured students are currently receiving medical treatment.
Turkey’s Interior Ministry and Ministry of National Education have launched investigations into the incident as officials work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said the school had previously been classified among institutions considered to be at high risk of incidents of this nature.
Authorities have urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities, including the places they visit and the websites and online platforms they use.
Officials responsible for firearms have said the weapon used in the shooting was registered in the name of the suspect’s grandfather.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety around schools and the need for closer monitoring of potential risks involving young people.
Police are continuing their investigations to determine the suspect’s motive and establish what led to the shooting.
Authorities are also expected to examine how the firearm came into the suspect’s possession.
