Nankhumwa and Jeffrey left in the cold
…the two not invited for a DPP NGC meeting

Divisions continues to widen in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as reports from the former ruling perty indicates that that the embattled Kondwani Nankhumwa and Secretary General Grizelder Jeffrey have been sidelined at the party’s central executive meeting taking place at Peter Mutharika’s PAGE residence in Mangochi.

Confirming this development Jeffrey said Nankhumwa and herself have not been invited to attend the high-level Tuesday meeting.
Jeffrey said the development vindicates what they have been saying all along that they are not responsible for the prevailing squabbles in the party.
“This only proves that me and Nankhumwa are not the problem in DPP. There is a court order reinstating us on our positions, but look, they are there meeting while excluding us” said Jeffrey.

This development is not surprising as the Nankhumwa and Jeffrey have not been seeing eye to eye with Pater Mutharika’s led faction in what is seen as the biggest leadership crisis since the party was established in 2005.
Nankhumwa and Jeffrey have been fighting to wrestle power from Peter Mutharika and the two do not support suggestions of a comeback of the former Malawi President to represent the DPP in 2025.

President Lazarus Chakwera has advised Principal Secretaries from various government MDAs to ensure that the government system is being run smoothly.

He was speaking during an interface meeting he had with PSs from government departments at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Tuesday, June 14,2022.

Describing the government system as broken, President Chakwera said; “The reason I had my Secretary assemble you last week in preparation for meeting me today is because the broken systems I want fixed are controlled by you, because as Principal Secretaries, you are the Controlling Officers of our Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

You are the ones who control the Civil Service, and the fact that the Civil Service is broken, and in urgent need of fixing means that the task of fixing it rests on you.”

He added that his task is to give these Controlling Officers direction on what they must focus on and to engage in a continuous evaluation on whether they have what it takes to fix the country’s broken system.

Further President Chakwera told the PSs that they will be meeting the Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet monthly, with performance appraisals expected to be taking place quarterly.

“The first goal of these measures is to create synergy among you and increase the level of collaboration between you and my office, because ultimately, we must work for Malawians as one team.

The second goal is to ensure that we are on the same page regarding what exactly is broken in the Civil Service and what we must do as a matter of urgency to fix it.” Said the President.

He then told them that the directive is also aimed at ensuring that there is no MDA that is motivated by anything else other than excellent service to Malawi and its people.

Malawi leader has since pledged his total support for the Controlling Officers to make them succeed as a way of delivering the set goals.

Human Rights activists accuse Misa Malawi of backing lawlessness

Human Rights activists on Monday attacked Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi for asking Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) to reverse its decision of revoking the broadcasting licence for Rainbow Television Station.

Macra revoked the licence for the TV station following non-payment of broadcasting fees and after failed attempts to get the broadcaster pay.

Reacting to the move, Misa Malawi on Sunday wrote Macra expressing concern over the decision and urged Macra to rescind it and continue negotiations with the broadcaster.

However, different activists and social media commentators has faulted Misa Malawi arguing that it is not supposed to side with lawlessness.

MISA Malawi Chair, Tereza Ndaga

Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) Board Chair Robert Mkwezalamba has also urged Rainbow Television to pay the fees and take back their licence.

“Every station must know that they operate as long as their licence is active hence need to always work towards paying the fees,” he said.

Renowned Social commentator Muze Muchizi says the only remedy here is let Rainbow TV pay the fees.

Muchizi says the issues here boarders on law and and Macra has not operated outside its mandate.

Said Muchizi: “No need for negotiations, Rainbow Television has defaulted paying broadcasting license fee as required by law. Revocation of the licence is the set punishment for defaulters.

Macra has just acted within its mandate. There is nothing like the government trying to silence critical voices, Rainbow Television is on the wrong side of the law, they deserve what they have gotten.”

Muchizi advised Rainbow Television to just raise the money, pay as required and have their licence back.

“There is no need for negotiations lest we set a bad precedence,” added Muchizi.

In the statement, Misa Malawi said it has noted with concern the revocation of the licence as announced by Macra Director General Daud Suleiman.

“MISA Malawi finds the revocation disturbing considering that there had already been ongoing negotiations between the two parties.

“At the time of the announcement of the licence revocation, Rainbow Television had paid, in two instalments, almost half of the required amount. MACRA has therefore announced the revocation on the basis of the remaining amount,” reads part of the statement.
