President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday, 18th October, 2023 sent the newly crowned Hollywood-Bet COSAFA Women’s Football champions, the Scorchers over the moon when he gave each of the traveling squad a cool K1.5 million and a 35 by 25 metres plot in Lilongwe’s Area 45 as a token of thanks for their gallant fight in the tourney that earned them a gold medal in the Rainbow nation last weekend.

The message that came as a surprise through State House spokesperson, Anthony Kasunda soon after President Chakwera made his speech of appreciation to the scorchers during the lunch-on he organized for the team at Kamuzu Palace read; “It has pleased our President to honor everyone who was in the squad that traveled to South Africa for COSAFA women’s football tournament with K1.5 million. As this is not enough for the success, the President says, everyone will also receive a 35 by 25 metres plot in Lilongwe’s area 45, however the President is appealing for all well-wishers to come forward in appreciation for what our team has done”

In his speech President Chakwera congratulated the womens national team for putting lungs-out to make sure they brought the cup to the home soil.

“I am so happy to welcome and to host you the Scorchers here at Kamuzu Palace in your capacity as the 2023 COSAFA women champions, that is no mean achievement. It did not happen by luck.

And it is certainly not by luck that you snatched the crown from the grasp of the defending champions themselves with a 2-1 victory over Zambia with a magical strike from Asimenye Simwaka in the first half, and a winning strike from Sabina Thom in the injury time to deny the Copper Queens for another title” Said President Chakwera while happily congratulating the youthful national women’s football team.

However, President Chakwera told the gathering that the success in disorienting teams and snatching the crown has been achieved due to lifetime family support, ambition to succeed, hard work, discipline, good coaching, and timeless love of country, saying that was the whole reason he hosted them at the Palace on behalf of all Malawians.

Added President Chakwera; “It was only right that on behalf of all Malawians I should host you at Kamuzu Palace, this is the people’s house. Its your house to celebrate you and to thank you for making us all proud as you have done”

In his remarks, Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire described the win as memorable performance having won all the five games and bringing the tournament for the very first time in the history of Malawi football.

“This achievement depicts a lot of positive developments. Key to these developments are the following; Malawi has great talents which just need to be identified and nurtured, Women can equally help to develop the country if given opportunities and support, this is an example of an equal opportunities of both genders at its best. Your Excellency’s wise leadership and support towards the youth and sports sector is yielding the tangible results that Malawians expect, particularly in sports development” Said the Minister while assuring Malawians that under the leadership of President Chakwera, his Ministry will continue to support all sports discipline for more medals and trophies into the country.

On their part, Adelaide Migogo (Women’s football Chairperson) and Walter Nyamilandu (FAM President) commended President Chakwera for his encouragement, saying under his leadership football has achieved a lot in the country.

Malawi women’s national football team had to win all its five assignments to bring lad the trophy on the Malawi soil for first time ever.

FAM disciplinary
committee sets aside Nomads abandoned match ruling

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Disciplinary Committee has on Tuesday through a statement announced that it has set aside all decisions made by the association’s Competitions Subcommittee in a case Mighty Mukuru Wanderers were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their Airtel Top 8 quarterfinal first leg against Silver Strikers.

The Disciplinary Committee faulted the Competitions Subcommittee for not following set procedures when coming up with its determination of September 28, 2023 which fined the Nomads K24.5 million and declared that they lost the match 3-0.

Said FAM in a statement: “ In this regard, Article 94 of the Disciplinary Code for FAM is very clear. The parties shall be heard before any decision is passed. In the view of the Committee, it is clearly the case that no disciplinary measure or indeed any other measure which adversely impacts another can be meted out against any person before that person is heard.

“The Committee forms the distinct view that the infraction of Article 94 of the Disciplinary Code for FAM was even more severe in this case where the right to a hearing was completely abrogated. The decisions of such a flawed process cannot stand. The Committee therefore sets aside all of the decisions that were made by the Competitions Committee as communicated in its Determination dated 28th September 2023.”

The ruling further ordered the Competitions Subcommittee to start all over the disciplinary proceedings.

The Disciplinary Committee comprised Allison M’bang’ombe (chairperson), Ted Roka (vice chairperson) and Khumbo Bonzoe Soko (member).

NGOs preaches about change in Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights

In an inspiring endeavor to bolster awareness of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) across the nation, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) radiate optimism.

One notable force in the battle against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and the facilitation of contraceptive services for adolescent girls and young women is the non-profit organization, “Point of Progress,” through their dynamic project, “Her Future Her Choice.”

Henderson Phiri, the HFHC Project Officer, emphasizes that this initiative places a laser focus on adolescent girls and young women aged 10 to 24.

Project officer, Henderson Phiri addressing the gathering

He said this age group frequently grapples with the societal oversight of their SRHR, particularly in terms of accessing contraceptives.

“Girls and young women aged 10 to 24 often confront unfounded stigmatization when seeking contraceptives, unfairly judged as promiscuous or lacking self-respect in their sexual choices.

“Furthermore, cultural norms often curtail open conversations about sexuality with young individuals, especially among adolescent girls and young women. Our project strives to bridge this gap by ensuring they access comprehensive information regarding sexual and reproductive health, especially in the context of contraceptives,”he said.

Phiri passionately expressed this during an awareness campaign conducted in Unit 6, TA Malili, Lilongwe, on October 14, 2023.

Phiri also said that their ambitious aim is to reach about 4,000 young women and girls.

What adds a layer of excitement to this project is the extension of its timeline by a year, thanks to their triumphant accomplishment of the initial objectives within the stipulated period.

“At the project’s inception, our goal was to impart SRHR knowledge to 80% of young women and girls. Initially, the figure hovered around 30%, but through a mid-line evaluation survey, we’ve witnessed a surge to 86%. We anticipate even greater strides during the end-line evaluation survey,” he shared.

The ‘Her Future Her Choice’ project, funded by Global Affairs Canada through OXFAM Malawi, and meticulously implemented by the dedicated team at the Point of Progress organization, is set to illuminate the lives of young women and girls in T/A Chimutu and T/A Malili in Lilongwe.
