The Minister of Civic Education and National Unity Honourable Timothy Mtambo joined the Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and other high profile guests as main speakers on this years international leadership conference Africa Region ILC2022 organised by Universal Peace Federation (UPF) international
The theme for this year conference was “analysis and strategies for peace on the Korean Peninsula and its relevance for Africa Region”. The conference had main location as Abuja Nigerian and Dar es salaam in Tanzania and took place on August 2nd and 3rd . The Malawi minister participated Virtually. The Conference built on the discussions and outcomes of the World Summit 2022 that took place in Korea in February and which resulted in the signing of the Seoul Declaration.
UPF is a global network of peace builders whose work centres around interfaith peace building, Peace and security, United Nations relations, education and human development and Youth and service. UPF promotes the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and encourages people to work for peace through serving their communities The organisation was founded by Korean Rev. Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, founded the Universal Peace Federation in 2005
Mtambo’s talk centred around “Peace and Conflict Management: Role of NGOs and FBOs
Case Study of Malawi.” He said Conflicts are part of human experience and that what matters most is the manner of managing conflicts “There are pre-requisites to successful management of conflicts. These include soft and hardware requirements in form of relevant knowledge and skills, on one hand, and policy, legal and institutional frameworks, on the other” Mtambo said. Mtambo who appeared on session five of the conference was also joined by Prof PLO Lumumba, University professor, Pan-Africanist and prominent speaker,Prof Shepherd Mayatula, South Africa and Hon. Venerable NZETBITEGHE, Senator in the Parliament of Gabon, Former Minister and former Advisor to the President of the Republic of Gabon
Mtambo highlighted a number of areas that likely bring conflicts in Malawi that includes property ownership especially land; chieftaincy succession; political and inter-religious conflicts
In regard to Frameworks for peaceful conflict resolution the minster shed light on some of the areas that his ministry has achieved in order to create a perfect platform for conflict resolution. The areas mentioned were The National Constitution, National Peace Policy, Ministry of National Peace and Unity
The Peace and Unity Act (2022): “the key objective of the Act is to provide for a mechanism for fostering peace and unity in Malawi; the establishment, management and operation of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission; the establishment of a national structure for conflict prevent, management and resolution.” Said Mtambo.
Mtambo shared the key lessons that Malawi has learnt from the experiences it has experienced so far. He said there is Urgent need to locate peace and unity at the very centre of public development policy arguing that There is general consensus that sustainable development is subject to peace and unity.
Another lesson is that “There is need for the Creation of a culture of peace-personal attitude, value and belief systems are foundational to the culture of peace. Thus, entrenching peace education in the school curriculum is critical for future generations”
He went further to say the third lessons learnt is on Role of civil society and faith-based organizations highlighting that civil society organizations are well placed to advance the course of peace. He said given apparent neutrality civil society organizations can play roles of: Civic education for peace,
Peace blockers through negotiations and mediation, and advancing the attitudes and values of peace through preaching and early religious formation programmes
Other main speaker at the conference was the Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also chairman of ISCP – Africa, Senator Mohamed Lafiagi from Ecowas Parliament, Dr Thomas Walsh, chairman of UPF international, Hon Gerald Gbenonchi , member of parliament in Benin and Dr Kathy Rigney who is the chairperson of UPF Africa.
Malawi national beach soccer team has qualified for their first ever Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) despite losing 6-5 to Tanzania on Sunday.
The Malawi team played Tanzania at Coco Beach Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday in a second leg match and qualified on an away goal rule after winning the first leg 3-2 at the Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima two week ago.
During Sunday’s match, Malawi scored through Isaac Kajam, Martin Biliati, Sandram Saddi and Dala Simba while,Yaha, Stephani Mapunda, Jaruph Juma and Eric Manyama were on target for the home side.
National Beach Soccer Team Coach Willy Kumilambe has since thanked his charges for the hard working spirit and asked more support from Malawians for the team to perform much better in the tournament.
The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) is expected to be held in October this year in Maputo, Mozambique.
The Minister of Civic Education and National Unity Honourable Timothy Mtambo on Sunday worshiped at prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church at Golden Peacock Complex in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Mtambo visited the church in his capacity as a minister after receiving an invitation from the church for him to be the guest of honour during the first Sunday of the Jesus Nation month. The service brought together a diversity of congregants from across the globe who usually come as international visitors.
In his speech, the Minister underlined that his coming to worship at ECG was a statement that Malawi government values the role religious organisations such as ECG The Jesus Nation Church plays in civic education and fostering national unity.

Mtambo also urged the congregation to continue praying for leaders and those that are doing good deeds in the society. He says the spirit of wanting to see people that seem too be doing well fall is not welcome in Malawi and that a mindset change is need so that as a nation we should embrace and celebrate those that re doing good
“When people do good, we should not be praying to see them fall but should pray to see them rising,” said the Minister
Mtambo also said he was not new to the ECG family, pointing out that he was in University with ECG associate Prophet Justice Hara , whom he said was helpful in inspiring the other students and leading prayers during the college days
Leader of ECG Prophet Shepherd Bushiri thanked Mtambo for accepting invitation to attend the church service. Bushiri presented “The Jesus Nation” book to the Minister. In the book, the Bushiri writes how Jesus Christ is raising men and women of God to control all spheres of life before His return.
All eight teams have now been confirmed for the quarter-finals of the FDH Cup following victories of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets on Sunday
Wanderers emphatically booked their place in the last eight of the cup when they beat Dedza Dynamos 3-0 in their round of 16 match that took place at Dedza Stadium.
Yamikani Chester put the Nomads ahead as he tapped in from a Vincent Nyangulu pass 34 minutes in the first half.
After the assist, Nyangulu went own to put his name on the score sheet 11 minutes later after heading home a well taken cross from Stanley Sanudi.
After 45 minutes, it was 2-nil in favor of the visitors who dominated possession right from the first whistle.
In the second half, Alfred Manyozo Jnr scored the third goal for the Nomands after an assist from Isaac Kaliati in the 52nd minute to end the match 3-0 in favor of the Lali Lubani side.
In Blantyre, Babatunde Adepoju scored the winning penalty for Nyasa Big Bullets as the People’s team beat Moyale Barracks 4-2 on post match penalties after the match ended 4-4 in regulation time.
Lanjesi Nkhoma, Patrick Mwaungulu, Precious Sambani and Babatunde Adepoju scored for the People’s team in regulation time while Moyale relied on Gasten Simkonda, Raphael Phiri and Lloyd Njaliwa’s brace.
After the two matches Lloyd Njaliwa for Moyale and Yamikani Chester for Wanderers received the man of the match awards.
Regional League teams, Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves, Changalume Barracks, Extreme FC and Chitipa United are among the teams in the cup’s quarterfinals.
Super League sides in the FDH Cup quarterfinals include Kamuzu Barracks, Blue Eagles, Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
