MEC to host SADC Electoral Forum in June 2025

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially announced that it will host a key regional electoral event in June 2025.

According to a public statement released by MEC, the country will welcome Chief Electoral Officers and Executive Committee Members of the Electoral Commission Forum for SADC countries.

The high-level meetings are scheduled to take place from 1st to 4th June 2025 in the capital city, Lilongwe.

This gathering is part of ongoing efforts by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to strengthen electoral processes and democratic governance across the region.

The Commission emphasized that the announcement is intended solely for public information purposes.

It further clarified that the statement does not serve as an invitation for the general public to attend the event.

The meetings will bring together senior electoral officials from various SADC member states to deliberate on issues of electoral integrity, collaboration, and best practices.

As the host, Malawi is expected to benefit from knowledge-sharing and regional cooperation in managing electoral processes.

The event also underscores MEC’s growing role in regional electoral matters and its commitment to upholding democratic standards both domestically and across the region.

MEC has not yet disclosed the specific agenda for the meetings, but such forums typically include discussions on voter registration systems, election monitoring, capacity building, and legal reforms.

The hosting of the forum places Malawi at the center of regional dialogue on electoral governance and showcases the country’s openness to regional collaboration.
