Zomba City Council Mayor Christopher Jana has accused politicians, influential individuals, and some forestry officials of exacerbating deforestation in Zomba Mountain Forest.
Speaking at a fun walk and hike event organized by the Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) in partnership with Friends of Mulunguzi Dam and Southern Region Water Board, Jana emphasized that timber businesses, often backed by wealthy individuals colluding with politicians and forestry officials, are primarily responsible for the damage.

While acknowledging villagers’ role in the deforestation, Jana stressed that the destruction is largely driven by those with financial interests and connections to power.
The event aimed to raise awareness about conservation and protect the forest from further degradation.
PRSM President Benson Linje welcomed the community’s enthusiasm, encouraging participants to continue supporting conservation efforts throughout the year.
Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) Director General Rachel Mijiga, whose organization supported the initiative, pledged to do more next year.
The government’s efforts to address the issue include deploying Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers to patrol the forest and revoke concession licenses for stakeholders contributing to the destruction.
The link between deforestation and its impact on the environment and water supply is a concern, and community members and organizations are urged to collaborate in protecting Zomba Mountain Forest.
By working together, they can mitigate the effects of deforestation and promote sustainable environmental management.
