Tributes pour in for Deputy Minister of Local Government and Mwanza West MP Joyce Chitsulo

Tributes are pouring in following the death of Deputy Minister of Local Government, Culture and National Unity,Joyce Chitsulo who died on Friday afternoon in Lilongwe.

In a statement , President Lazarus Chakwera expressed shock over the sudden passing of Honourable Joyce Chitsulo who was also member of Parliament for Mwanza West Constituency.

“I knew Honourable Chitsulo as a person whose personal motto and mission was “development over politics “. She lived every minute of her political life in pursuit of this golden clarion call that we all need to adopt. It is tragic that such a patriot and courageous citizen has departed at such a time of our national development,” reads the statement in part.

The Late Chitsulo



Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda described Chitsulo as a true leader who significantly contributed to the national building, growth and progress.

“Joyce Chitsulo was a “trailblazer and a beacon” of inspiration for women in Malawi and she significantly contributed to the national building, growth and progress.

Her unwavering commitment to youth and women empowerment, promotion of unity and culture has left an indelible mark on our nation.

Her legacy will continue to inspire generations not only in her constituency but the nation as well,” said Chimwendo

Many Malawians also took to social media to mourn the departed cabinet minister.

Among those that paid tribute is Journalist and Communication Specialist Herbert Chawinga who described the late Chitsulo as a very humble lady.

“So sad to learn about the death of Mwanza West Constituency MP Hon. Joyce Chitsulo. She was such a humble lady despite her personal, governance and political achievements.”

Austin Oduor Otieno described the late Chitsulo as a caring mother  who instilled discipline, humility, generosity, and a deep respect for God and humanity.

“Hon. Chitsulo was more than a political figure. She was full of life, full of joy—true to her name. A proud grandmother and loving mother, she often spoke of her family with warmth and pride.

Chitsulo, 47, is reported to have collapsed at her home on Friday morning and was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

According to a statement signed by Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Collen Zamba, details for funeral programme will be announced in due course.
