Malawi’s poor and vulnerable households have been thrown a major lifeline after Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha launched the new Strategy for Sustainable Financing for Social Protection at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on Friday, 4 September 2026.
The high-profile event brought together government leaders, development partners and civil society under one roof to witness what officials described as a turning point in how Malawi funds and delivers support to those most in need.
Speaking as Guest of Honour, Mwanamvekha said the new strategy is a direct reflection of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s commitment to leave no Malawian behind.
He noted that without reliable and sustainable funding, social protection programs will remain on paper, but under President Mutharika’s leadership, government is now putting concrete systems in place to ensure money reaches the people who need it most.
“His Excellency President Mutharika has made it clear that reducing poverty is not just a slogan. It is action.This strategy ensures that our social protection programs are properly financed, predictable, and able to respond to shocks affecting poor households across the country,” Mwanamvekha told the gathering.
The Minister emphasized that the strategy will help government move away from donor dependency and ad-hoc funding by creating a clear financing framework that guarantees continuity of programs like cash transfers, public works, and support for people with disabilities.
Also speaking at the launch, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Hon. Mary Thom Navicha hailed the move as bold and timely.
Navicha said the strategy will strengthen the social protection system and build resilience among vulnerable families, especially women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities who bear the heaviest burden of poverty.
Dignitaries and stakeholders present commended President Mutharika for prioritizing the welfare of Malawians at a time when many countries are struggling with economic pressure.
They said the launch proves that the Mutharika administration is focused on practical solutions, not politics.
Government has been rolling out social protection initiatives nationwide, and with this new financing strategy, officials say implementation will be faster, more transparent, and better targeted.
As the event closed, beneficiaries and community representatives expressed hope that the strategy will translate into real support on the ground.
The message from BICC was clear: under President Mutharika, social protection is no longer an afterthought.
It is now a funded, planned, and protected pillar of Malawi’s development agenda.
