Jaffu pledges to prioritise soldiers’ welfare

By Chisomo Phiri

Newly appointed Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, General George Jaffu, has pledged to make the welfare of soldiers a top priority during his tenure, emphasising the need for improved accommodation and modern military equipment.

Jaffu made the commitment following his official appointment and promotion during a ceremony held at President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s Page House residence in Mangochi on Friday.

He said the MDF’s continued success depends on motivated personnel who are well-equipped to meet the demands of modern security challenges.

“My key focus will be on promoting the welfare of our men and women in uniform. This includes providing decent accommodation and ensuring that our troops are equipped with modern tools necessary to effectively carry out their duties,” said Jaffu.

In his remarks, Mutharika, who officiated the ceremony, described Jaffu as a seasoned and distinguished military professional whose leadership will further strengthen Malawi’s national security and stability.

“I have followed his career closely. His appointment is a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication to the values of the Malawi Defence Force,” said Mutharika.

Before his elevation to the top post, Jaffu served as Deputy Commander of the Defence Force since May 2024.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom and has completed several specialised military training programmes, including joint operations planning and United Nations military observer training.
