Kawale Police Nab Woman Over Alleged Attempt on Baby’s Life

Kawale Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman, Spiwe Kaiyatsa, for allegedly attempting to kill her 7-month old baby, by poisoning her with some chemicals (name withheld) in Area 38, Lilongwe.

According to Kawale Police Spokesperson, Mabvuto Precious Phiri,  the suspect  who stays in Area 38, Lilongwe dumping site (mtaya), went out on March, 2025, leaving the child in custody of house maid and grand mother.

Phiri said the suspect came back later the same night when the child was sleeping with her grandmother and she took the child to her room, but after few minutes, the child started coughing unceasingly which caught the attention of grand mother and maid, who took the victim to bathroom where she started vomiting, and they further discovered that the victim was smelling drugs which made them to search the suspect and discovered that she had a bottle of drugs.

He added that the maid together with the child’s grandmother rushed to Bwaila Hospital with the baby where they were refered to Kamuzu Central Hospital for further medical treatment.

Later the matter was reported to police leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The suspect,  who hails from Chilobwe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsomba in Blantyre, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of attempted murder.
