MHEN Applauds Sanitation Drive but Urges Action Beyond Policy

By Rahim Abdul

The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has welcomed the government’s latest move to roll out an implementation plan for Executive Order Number 2 of 2026, describing it as a significant milestone in addressing the country’s long standing sanitation challenges.

The order places responsibility on operators of public spaces including markets, bus depots, schools, workplaces and recreational centers to ensure the availability and maintenance of proper sanitation and waste disposal facilities.

According to MHEN, the official launch of the plan signals a stronger political will to confront hygiene related concerns that have continued to affect public health across Malawi.

Jobe

MHEN Executive Director George Jobe highlighted the presence of top government officials at the launch as a clear indication of unity and seriousness in tackling sanitation issues nationwide.

He pointed out that the participation of key ministries, such as Health and Sanitation, Local Government and Rural Development and Education, reflects a coordinated and multi sectoral approach something stakeholders have long called for.

Jobe also welcomed the introduction of specialized waste management vehicles to support city councils and central hospitals, a development backed by the Global Fund.

He noted that improved waste collection systems will not only enhance cleanliness in urban areas but also contribute to safer and healthier communities.

Despite the progress, MHEN has cautioned that the success of the initiative will depend heavily on sustained financial investment and proper oversight mechanisms.

The network stressed the importance of establishing robust monitoring systems to track progress and ensure that standards are being met consistently across all public facilities.

It further called for clear enforcement strategies to hold duty bearers accountable, warning that without firm action, the order risks becoming ineffective.

MHEN maintains that while the policy direction is commendable, translating it into real change on the ground remains the ultimate test.

The organization has since urged authorities to move swiftly from planning to implementation to ensure Malawians begin to experience tangible improvements in sanitation and hygiene.
