Fugitive murder suspect spotted in South Africa, HRDC demands justice

By Burnett Munthali

A decade-old murder case has been reignited in Malawi after a video surfaced allegedly showing the suspect, Ali Kaka Chinemba, in South Africa.

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is calling for immediate action from the Malawi Police Service to apprehend Chinemba and bring him to justice.

HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa emphasizes that the right to life must be upheld, and police should pursue all leads to locate the fugitive.

“Police need to act decisively. The passage of time should not be an excuse for inaction when it comes to serious crimes such as murder,” Kaiyatsa said.

The video, which sparked widespread public interest, shows Chinemba defending himself during a xenophobic attack in South Africa.

Security expert Aubrey Kabisala notes that apprehending a fugitive outside Malawi is complex, requiring coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies or international bodies like Interpol.

The case highlights the challenges of cross-border justice and the need for international cooperation.

As HRDC pushes for justice, Malawians are watching closely, demanding accountability and closure for the victim’s family.
