KwaZulu-Natal Police sweep Durban’s South Beach in compliance operation, illegally operating businesses shut down

By Burnett Munthali

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are conducting an operation in Durban’s South Beach area, where they are checking businesses for compliance.

The targeted action is part of a broader effort to enforce municipal by-laws, trading regulations, and immigration laws along the city’s busy coastal precinct.

Officers moved from shop to shop verifying licences, permits, and the legal status of workers as part of the compliance checks.

Some business owners operating illegally were taken in for questioning after failing to produce required documentation.

Authorities said those detained will be processed and could face fines, closure orders, or further investigation depending on what is uncovered.

There is a high police presence across the area, with visible patrols on foot and in vehicles along the beachfront.

A section of Dr Pixley KaSeme Street has been cordoned off to manage traffic and to create a secure perimeter for the operation.

The road closure caused delays for motorists and pedestrians, with police directing movement away from the active enforcement zone.

Shop owners in the cordoned area were asked to remain open only if they could prove full compliance with local and national regulations.

The operation has drawn attention from traders, tourists, and residents who frequent South Beach, one of Durban’s most visited public spaces.

Police said the goal is not only to remove non-compliant businesses but also to restore order and safety in a high-traffic part of the city.

KwaZulu-Natal police have indicated that similar compliance operations may continue in other parts of Durban in the coming weeks.
