Malawian competitive eater Austin Awali, popularly known as Spanner Malawi, has been crowned the fastest eater in Nigeria after defeating five of the country’s top competitive eaters in the latest round of an international eating championship.
The victory marks another major milestone for the Malawian entertainer, who has now remained unbeaten throughout the competition in Nigeria.
Spanner’s latest triumph came after he defeated his Nigerian rival, popularly known as Spanner Nigeria, in the championship’s third contest, earning a cash prize of 400,000 Nigerian Naira.
Speaking after the contest, Spanner expressed delight with his performance and thanked Malawians for their unwavering support throughout the tournament.
“I am very happy with how things are going. I have now won all the three contests I have taken part in here,” he said.
Only one contest remained before the championship concluded, with organisers confirming that the overall winner would earn an opportunity to attempt a Guinness World Records challenge.
According to organisers, the Guinness World Records attempt involves eating 50 balls of fufu within the required time limit, with the challenge scheduled in Nigeria.
Spanner travelled to Nigeria earlier this year after securing support from well wishers in Malawi, describing the trip as one of the biggest opportunities of his career.
His performances have attracted widespread attention in both Malawi and Nigeria, with many supporters hoping he will complete the competition unbeaten and become one of the few Malawians to earn recognition in the Guinness World Records.
If successful in the Guinness World Records attempt, Spanner would achieve a historic milestone for both himself and Malawi in the growing field of competitive eating.
