While Malawi’s national women’s football team, the Scorchers, compete on the field at WAFCON 2026, Blantyre’s Mayor is scoring diplomatic goals off it. His Worship, Isaac Jomo Osman, held a high-level bilateral meeting in Rabat this week with Her Excellency, Fatiha El Moudni, Mayor and President of the Rabat Communal Council.
Although the visit formally began as a courtesy call, discussions quickly pivoted to concrete governance issues. The two leaders agreed to establish a robust city-to-city partnership aimed at tackling common urban challenges through shared expertise.
The new cooperative framework will focus on several critical areas, including the development and management of city parks, integrated street lighting and public security systems, sustainable water resource management, modern waste disposal solutions, housing and land development, as well as professional training programs for municipal officers.
More importantly, the mayors framed this municipal alliance as a grassroots contribution to the broader diplomatic ties between Malawi and Morocco. By aligning their efforts with the agendas of Malawi’s President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, and Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, the two cities aim to deepen South-South Cooperation and give tangible form to the existing Joint Commission of Cooperation (JCC) between the two nations.
