MRA Unveils Five-Year Plan to Boost Revenue Collection

By Rahim Abdul

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has unveiled a five-year strategic plan aimed at widening the tax base and improving compliance to strengthen the country’s revenue collection.

Finance, Economic Planning and Development Minister Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha launched the MRA 2026–2031 Corporate Strategic Plan on Monday in Blantyre.

Speaking during a panel discussion involving representatives from the Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and German International Cooperation (GIZ), MRA Deputy Commissioner General Allans Nkhoma said the plan will guide the authority’s operations over the next five years.

Nkhoma said MRA will focus on expanding the tax base and improving compliance, while ensuring that the implementation of the strategic plan remains on course and free from unnecessary distractions.

Mwanamvekha said the plan is expected to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation, which he said is critical to supporting key development sectors such as health, education and agriculture.

The Minister has since urged Malawians to comply with the country’s tax collection systems, saying increased compliance will contribute to the successful implementation of the strategic plan.

Mwanamvekha also encouraged the public to continue engaging MRA whenever they require clarification on tax-related initiatives, citing the discussions that took place around the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS).

He further called on development partners to provide technical and other forms of support to ensure the strategic plan achieves its intended objectives.

Meanwhile, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Representative Fanella Frost has pledged the organisation’s support towards the successful implementation of the plan.

The strategic plan is expected to provide a roadmap for MRA’s efforts to improve revenue mobilisation and contribute to Malawi’s economic development over the next five years.
