South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken sick leave after returning from the BRICS Summit in India, with his medical team advising him to rest and recover before resuming some of his public engagements.

The South African Presidency says in a statement that Ramaphosa returned to the country on Monday after attending the summit, which brought together leaders of major emerging economies to discuss cooperation on economic and development issues.

According to the Presidency, Ramaphosa’s medical team has recommended that he take time off following his return to South Africa.

The Presidency has not disclosed details about the nature of the President’s illness or indicated how long he is expected to remain on sick leave.

As a result, Ramaphosa will not attend several public engagements that had been scheduled for the coming days.

Government ministers are expected to represent the President at official events where his presence had been planned, allowing government programmes and activities to continue during his absence.

Ramaphosa’s participation in the BRICS Summit focused on strengthening cooperation among member states, particularly in areas relating to economic development and broader international collaboration.

The announcement of his sick leave has attracted attention in South Africa, with members of the public wishing the President a speedy recovery.
