Young Malawian Wins National Leadership Award in the UK

By Linda Kwanjana

A young Malawian professional has been named a national award winner in the United Kingdom, recognised for his work driving change across the UK’s technology and financial sectors.

Alexander Matambo, was named Future Leader at a national awards ceremony,  the 2026 Ethnicity Awards. The ceremony held in London celebrates outstanding contributions to inclusion, opportunity and leadership in Britain. The award recognizes young talent demonstrating leadership and making a meaningful impact within their industries and wider communities.

Matambo’s journey began at Kamuzu Academy in Malawi before he moved to South Africa to study at Rhodes University, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance and a postgraduate diploma in Media Management, graduating with distinction in the latter. In 2020, he received the Chancellor’s International Business Scholarship to study at the University of Sussex in England, where he completed a Master of Science in International Marketing with distinction.

He began his professional career in London, working in media and marketing before moving into management consulting. In 2023, he joined Bloomberg, the global financial technology, data and media company, where he has progressed into enterprise account management.

Today, Matambo works as an Enterprise Account Manager, managing commercial relationships with some of the UK’s leading institutional financial firms. His responsibilities include supporting the adoption of financial technology, artificial intelligence and quantitative analytics, developing client relationships and contributing to commercial growth across complex financial services organisations.

Alongside his commercial responsibilities, Matambo serves as EMEA External Engagement Lead for Bloomberg Black in Tech, developing partnerships between Bloomberg and leading technology companies, financial institutions and professional organisations. Through this work, he has helped convene senior leaders, establish cross-industry collaborations and deliver flagship events bringing together hundreds of professionals.

He is also a founding member of Black in Tech UK, a national coalition connecting Black employee networks across major technology companies. The initiative addresses the fragmentation of professional development and representation efforts across organisations by creating opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and collective impact. Through it, Matambo has supported efforts to improve access to professional networks, career development and opportunities emerging from technologies such as artificial intelligence.

In announcing the award, the Ethnicity Awards judges highlighted the reach of his work beyond any single employer, recognising his contribution to building national professional networks, his invitation to contribute to ITV News, the development of a free tool helping individuals access career opportunities, and initiatives supporting education and professional development for young people aged 16 to 24.

The award concludes a particularly successful period of recognition. Earlier in 2026, Matambo was ranked third on the EMpower Future Leaders Role Model List, an international initiative supported by YouTube that celebrates emerging leaders in business and their communities. He was also named a finalist for Financial Services Employee of the Year at the 2026 Black Talent Awards, in a category judges described as the most competitive of the year, and was selected for the inaugural EMERGE 100, which recognises 100 Black professionals across the United Kingdom for their character, capability and contribution.

Reflecting on the journey, Matambo said he had built his career largely on his own, often as the only person of his background in the room, and that his motivation was to open the way for others. “Talent is evenly distributed, opportunity is not, and I want to be part of the change to show what’s possible,” he said. “If this shows one student in Malawi that it is possible, it has done its job.”

From Kamuzu Academy and Rhodes University to postgraduate study in Britain and a career in London’s financial technology sector, his achievements reflect the growing international contribution of young Malawian professionals who have pursued opportunities abroad while maintaining ties to their country of origin. He is believed to be among the first Malawians recognised with a national award of this kind for demonstrable professional impact in the United Kingdom.
