Honour your parents: minister leaves office to serve his mother

By Jones Gadama

“Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.”

These are the words Hon. Chimwemwe Mazabuka Chipungu, Minister of Lands and Urban Development, lives by every day.

While many Malawians wait for Mother’s Day to post their mothers on Facebook, the Minister took off his ministerial throne this weekend and humbled himself as a son.

In the photos circulating, Hon. Chipungu is seen not in a suit, but in a simple vest and shorts, walking side by side with his mother. No convoy, no guards, just a son serving the woman who gave him life.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother – this is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” – Ephesians 6:1-3

Chipungu and his mother

You can see the joy on his mother’s face. As the Bible says, “Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.”

This is true leadership. Before he was a Minister, he was a son. Before the big office in Lilongwe, there was his mother’s home.

Malawi needs more leaders like this – leaders who remember where they came from.

If you can honour your mother when you have power, you can honour Malawians.

God bless the mother who raised such a humble son.
