ACB arrests immigration officer Rodwell Mwenebanda over corruption in Mzuzu

The country’s graft bursting body, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Mzuzu on Friday arrested an immigration officer Rodwell Mwenebanda on allegations that he misused his office by overcharging a client passport fees, among other offences.

In a statement 247 Malawi News has in possession, the ACB Principal Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala indicates that Mwenebanda, allegedly committed the offense on March 17, 2023.



She says the immigration officer charged two passport applicants the sum of K140,000 each for two passports instead of the government’s set fees of K90,000 per passport.

“He is likely to be charged with misuse of public office contrary to section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act, theft contrary to section 27B of the Penal Code and obtaining by false pretense contrary to section 319 of the Penal Code,” says Ndala in a statement.

According to Ndala, the suspect will be taken to court soon after recording caution statement for alleged charges.
