BADESE urges churches to support refugees amid aid cuts

By Chisomo Phiri

The Baptist Development Service (BADESE) has called on churches and faith-based organizations in the country to extend financial support to vulnerable communities, particularly refugees, in light of increasing aid reductions.

Speaking on Tuesday at Dzaleka Refugee Camp during a BADESE initiative, where the organization presented a K5 million cheque to support 40 refugees with startup capital for small businesses, President of the Baptist Convention of Reverend Dalitso Matekenya, emphasized the urgency of this appeal following the recent announcement by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) regarding the withdrawal of aid.

Reverend Matekenya noted that the development has left many refugees facing heightened financial hardships.

The beneficiaries have been organized into four groups, with each group receiving K1.25 million.

One of the recipients, Eunice Umali, expressed gratitude for the financial assistance, saying it would empower them to provide for their basic needs, including food.
