Former president Dr. Joyce Banda, has named Khumbo Kachali of Freedom Party (FP ) as her running mate in the upcoming tripartite elections scheduled for September 16 this year.
Banda, who is contesting under her political party, the People’s Party (PP), which she founded in 2011,on Thursday submitted her nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) at an event that took place at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC ) in the capital Lilongwe, expressing her interest to run for the presidency.

Standing before a packed hall filled with enthusiastic supporters from the PP , FP and Mafunde Party(MP), Banda declared her candidacy.
“I stand before the nation this morning to present myself before you and the Malawi Electoral Commission as the DPP’s presidential candidate in the forthcoming September 16 elections.
“I also have the honour to announce that Right Honourable Khumbo Hastings Kachali, former Vice President of this nation and President of FP, will be my honoured running mate.”
Banda described the pairing as one that “will serve Malawians well,” expressing confidence in the alliance’s ability to deliver meaningful change.
She also acknowledged the presence and support of Mafunde Party followers at the event.
After the announcement, Banda and Kachali proceeded to sign the electoral Code of Conduct, committing to abide by the rules and ensure a peaceful campaign.
They were joined by top officials from the three allied parties, who also signed the document in support.
Banda then formally handed over the signed Code of Conduct and her nomination papers to MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, marking the official submission of her presidential bid.
The submission solidifies the alliance between the PP , FP, and MP as they enter the race for Malawi’s presidency with a unified front.
