Ben Phiri warns chiefs over abuse of minors, restores dignity of traditional leadership

By Jones Gadama

Government has issued a firm warning that no one, including traditional leaders, will be spared by the law for engaging in sexual relationships with minors.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, made the remarks at Mangochi Stadium during the installation of Wasi Mponda as Sub Traditional Authority Kapichi and Mtalika Kusala as Sub Traditional Authority Chiponde.

Speaking to this reporter, Dr. Phiri said the law makes no exceptions for anyone found guilty of defiling an underage girl.

He said the crackdown is part of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s vision to protect children and secure the future of the country, a vision that saw government introduce free primary education in public schools to keep girls in class.

“The law is clear. We will not tolerate this malpractice. Offenders, regardless of status, will face the full force of the law,” Dr. Phiri said.

He also urged Members of Parliament and Ward Councillors to set politics aside and work together for community development.

Senior Chief Chowe, who represented Paramount Chief Kawinga, expressed disappointment over chiefs who abuse minors and urged fellow chiefs to lead by example and champion girls’ rights.

Chiefs at the event commended Dr. Phiri for his humility and respect towards the institution of chieftaincy.

According to them, their respect has now been restored with the coming in of Ben Phiri, a minister who engages chiefs as partners despite his senior government position.

The minister’s strong stance follows the recent conviction and sentencing of Senior Chief Malemia of Zomba to 21 years in prison for having sex with a minor and aiding in procuring an abortion.
