As Malawian speed eater Austin Awali, popularly known as Spanner Malawi, prepares for a Guinness World Record attempt in Nigeria, calls are growing for greater support from both the government and the private sector.
The entertainer and competitive eater is expected to travel to Nigeria later this week, where he hopes to add another milestone to his rapidly growing career and place Malawi on the global map.

However, his preparations have sparked debate after he appealed for financial assistance to cover expenses associated with the trip. Some critics questioned why he was seeking support despite winning K20 million in Nigeria last year and over K2 million in South Africa earlier this year.
Responding to the criticism during a TikTok Live session, Spanner said many people misunderstand the value of the prize money he has earned and the costs involved in pursuing opportunities abroad.
He explained that competitive eating is still a new venture for him, having entered the sport only a year ago. As a result, he does not yet have a manager or an organized support structure to help secure sponsorships and manage international engagements.
According to Spanner, while he has already secured a flight ticket to Nigeria, he still requires additional resources to cover other expenses connected to the trip.
His situation has reignited discussions about the challenges faced by talented Malawians who represent the country internationally without consistent backing from institutions and corporate sponsors.
Supporters argue that Spanner has become an ambassador for Malawi through his achievements, attracting international attention and showcasing local talent on platforms beyond the country’s borders.
Many have since urged stakeholders to invest in individuals like Spanner, saying their success contributes to national pride and helps raise Malawi’s profile internationally.
As anticipation builds ahead of the record attempt, Malawians will be watching closely to see whether Spanner can turn his latest challenge into another historic achievement for both himself and the nation.
