The Centre for Community Organisation and Development (CCODE) says building climate-resilient communities can help strengthen resilience against the impacts of climate change.
CCODE Advocacy and Community Engagement Officer, Mazgo Khonje, said this is why his organisation is implementing a project in Mgona Township, Lilongwe, called Accelerating Locally-Led Responses to Climate Change in Informal Settlements and Slums (ALLRCISS).
According to Khonje, through the project they will support safer housing, settlement upgrading, access to affordable housing finance, and improved waste management and recycling through community savings groups.

He disclosed this on Thursday during a community entry meeting held in Mgona Township, Lilongwe, aimed at fostering partnerships with residents of informal settlements to improve living conditions within the communities.
Senior Deputy Director for Urban Development in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mphatso Kaduluka, said the government remains committed to partnering with non-governmental organisations to advance community development initiatives across the country.
Councillor for Mgona ward, Feston Golozera has applauded the CCODE secretariat for the gesture saying the project will implove the livelihoods of the communities.
Mgona is one of Lilongwe’s informal settlements with its population changes rapidly due to migration and urban growth.
