CDEDI Questions BEAM Funding, Calls for Financial Accountability

By Rahim Abdul

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has expressed concern over the companies and individuals who contributed funds toward the revival of the Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM), saying it is surprising that some of them are facing various allegations.

BEAM is chaired by former First Lady Gertrude Mutharika and was relaunched after returning to public activities.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa said the organization is concerned about the identities and interests of some of the companies and individuals who financially supported the trust.

Namiwa said it is surprising that such significant financial contributions were made, particularly considering that similar support was not seen during the period when the Mutharikas were out of government.

According to reports cited by CDEDI, approximately K17.79 billion was raised during the fundraising initiative to support the activities of BEAM.

He questioned what benefits or expectations could be attached to such substantial donations, arguing that the source and purpose of the funding deserve public scrutiny.

Namiwa further said Gertrude Mutharika should ensure that while carrying out charitable work through BEAM, she does not become involved in matters that influence government administration or the appointment of public officials.

He also called for transparency and accountability in the operations of the trust to maintain public confidence and avoid perceptions of conflicts of interest.

The CDEDI Executive Director proposed that a comprehensive financial audit be conducted on BEAM, covering the period from 2014 to 2020 and from October 2025 to June 2026.

The organization says such an audit would help establish how the trust’s finances have been managed over the years and promote openness in the administration of charitable funds.
