President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has pleaded with United Nations (UN) Secretary General António Guterres to list Malawi among priority economies to get adequate funding in order to equip the country to build resilience against climate shocks.

Chakwera made the remarks on Friday during a one on one meeting with Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York, United States of America.

Malawi is reeling from pressure brought about by Covid – 19 as well as Tropical Cyclones Freddy, Ana and Gombe, among other forces.

Chakwera and Guterres

In consistency with my address, wrote Chakwera on his Facebook page, I restated some key issues whose solutions Malawi believes lie within the mandate of the multilateral bloc.

He added that he reminded Guterres that Malawi is in dire need of support towards post Tropical Cyclone Freddy reconstruction and recovery.

“In line with disasters induced by climate change, I also highlighted that Malawi must be among priority economies to get adequate financing so that we build resilience against climate shocks,” said Chakwera.

“I proposed that the forthcoming COP28 should be leveraged by the UN to mobilize more support for Malawi.”
