Egypt’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday after Argentina scored three late goals to snatch a dramatic 3-2 victory in the Round of 16, denying Africa another place in the quarter finals.
The Pharaohs looked destined to make history after taking a 2-0 lead and controlling the match until the 79th minute against the defending world champions.
Egypt made a bright start and were rewarded in the first half when Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to head home from a corner, sending the African supporters into celebration.
Argentina struggled to break down Egypt’s disciplined defence, and their frustration grew when captain Lionel Messi failed to convert a first half penalty after a brilliant save from goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
Egypt extended their advantage in the 67th minute through Mostafa Zico, whose composed finish from a swift counterattack left Argentina staring at an unlikely World Cup exit.
With just 11 minutes remaining, however, the momentum shifted dramatically. Cristian Romero pulled one back for Argentina in the 79th minute to ignite the South Americans’ fightback.
Four minutes later, Messi redeemed himself by scoring the equaliser to bring Argentina level and pile pressure on the Egyptian defence.
As the match entered stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed the remarkable comeback, firing home the winner in the 93rd minute to send Argentina into the quarter finals.
The result ended Egypt’s hopes of becoming one of the few African nations to reach the last eight of the FIFA World Cup and marked a painful end to a campaign that had inspired football fans across the continent.
Egypt had arrived in the knockout stage after an impressive tournament, showing tactical discipline, defensive organisation and resilience against some of the world’s strongest teams.
Although the defeat will hurt, the Pharaohs earned widespread admiration for pushing the reigning champions to the limit and proving that African teams can compete with football’s traditional powerhouses.
For Argentina, the comeback preserved their hopes of successfully defending the FIFA World Cup title, with Lionel Messi once again playing a decisive role when his team needed him most.
The South Americans will now face the winner between Switzerland and Colombia in the quarter finals as they continue their pursuit of another world title.
