In a move that is rewriting governance standards in Africa, the Republic of Malawi under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has become the first country in SADC to publish all major government contracts online in real-time.
Within the first 100 days of the DPP-led government, 143 contracts above MWK 50 million were uploaded to a new public procurement portal, complete with costs, timelines, and implementing companies.
The result: millions of Kwacha saved, public trust restored, and a direct attack on corruption.
“President Mutharika promised a government of transparency, and he delivered it in 100 days,” said Penjan Madumuse a governance expert in Lilongwe,adding that ,“This is what accountability looks like.”
For decades, secret deals and inflated tenders drained public resources.
That era ends now. By opening the books, the Mutharika administration is inviting citizens, civil society, donors, and investors to audit government spending themselves.
The portal has already flagged 3 overpriced road projects and 2 duplicate supply contracts, saving taxpayers an estimated MWK 4.2 billion.
Development partners have welcomed the move, calling it “a gold standard for Africa.”
This is the DPP government’s signature: promises kept, institutions strengthened, and power returned to the people.
As other nations debate anti-corruption policies, President Arthur Peter Mutharika has acted.
From promises to portals, Malawi is proving that courageous leadership can end secrecy and build a nation where every tambala is accounted for.
