In cooler for selling unregistered pesticide

By Rahim Abdul

A 52-year-old man is in police custody in Limbe after being caught selling unregistered pesticides in a development that raises fresh concerns over public safety and illegal agrochemical trade.

The suspect, identified as Anusa Bamusi from Shaibu Village under Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje District, was arrested on allegations of violating Section 44(1b) of the Pesticides Act.

According to Limbe Police, the arrest took place around 11:00 AM along Dalton Road, where Bamusi was operating a small business shelter.

He was reportedly found in possession of 10 bottles of a pesticide branded Biochlorodan, which authorities say is not registered for sale or distribution.

Police say the suspect was actively selling the chemicals at K15,000 per bottle at the time of his arrest.

The operation that led to his capture followed a tip-off and was executed in collaboration with officers from the Pesticides Control Board.

In a tactical move, the officers posed as potential customers and engaged the suspect in a transaction before confirming the illegal sale.

This approach enabled authorities to gather critical evidence while ensuring the suspect was caught in the act.

Law enforcement officials have since confiscated the pesticides, which are now being held as exhibits.

Investigations are currently underway to trace the origin of the unregistered chemicals and determine whether a larger supply network is involved.

Police have warned that the sale and use of unregistered pesticides pose serious health and environmental risks, urging the public to report suspicious activities.

Meanwhile, Bamusi is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to the illegal sale of agrochemicals.
