Blue Eagles have been plunged into a period of transition following the retirement announcement of experienced defender John CJ Banda, who has confirmed he is stepping away from active football.
Banda made the announcement through his official social media platforms, drawing the curtain on a career that saw him become one of the most senior and respected figures within the Area 30-based side.
The timing of his decision comes at an emotionally charged moment for the club, just after Blue Eagles were knocked out of the Castel Challenge Cup by Goshen City Dedza Dynamos.
The semi-final encounter ended 1–1 after 90 minutes, forcing the match into a penalty shootout where Goshen City emerged 4–3 winners to book a place in the final.
As attention was still on the dramatic cup exit, Banda’s retirement quickly shifted focus to the wider implications for the team’s future.
His departure leaves Blue Eagles with only two established senior players, Sankhani Mkandawire and Micium Mhone, as the remaining experienced heads in the squad.
The duo are now expected to play a key leadership role, guiding and mentoring younger players as the club looks to build for the future.
