Thousands of people have gathered at Esigodhleni, the headquarters of Inkosi Mzikubola, to witness the cultural coronation of Khetwayo Jere as Inkosi Mzikubola III.
Local media reports say the ceremony is taking place amid excitement among communities in the area, with the coronation expected to formally close a succession dispute that has left the Mzikubola throne without a permanent chief for more than 25 years.
Jere is ascending to the traditional throne after years of wrangling over succession, with residents previously expressing concern that the dispute was affecting development in the area.
The coronation has attracted large crowds to Esigodhleni, where traditional leaders, community members and other guests have gathered for the cultural ceremony.
The weather has remained sunny but windy, while the atmosphere at the venue has been described as celebratory.
For communities under the Mzikubola chieftaincy, the coronation marks an important moment following decades of uncertainty over the traditional leadership.
The ceremony is expected to formally usher Jere into his cultural role as Inkosi Mzikubola III.
