The Ministry of Local Government has donated computers to various arts organizations in the country as part of efforts to promote gender issues and advance digital skills.
The computers were handed over on Monday in Lilongwe during a ceremony held under the program ‘Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Malawi’s Arts and Culture Sector’.
Speaking at the event, the Ministry’s Director of Arts, Humphrey Mpondaminga, said the computers will help the organizations strengthen gender-related work and ensure that women’s creativity is more visible, especially online.
Also speaking at the event,Christopher Magomero from the Malawi National Commission for UNESCO, stressed that artists particularly women need support in different ways to grow their work.
On his part,President of the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM), Vita Chirwa, welcomed the donation, saying the computers will greatly support their initiatives to uplift women within the union.
In total, eleven computers were distributed to organizations including the Film Association of Malawi(FAMA ),MUM, Poetry Association of Malawi(PAM), Visual Artists Association of Malawi(VASM), among others.
