Malawi 90 days away from crucial elections

By Jones Gadama

Malawians are gearing up for a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic journey as the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) confirms that presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

With exactly 90 days to go, the Commission has reaffirmed the election date in accordance with Section 67 of the Constitution and relevant electoral laws.

The electoral process is set to unfold with key milestones, including the campaign period, which will officially run from July 14 to September 14, 2025.

Aspirants vying for Local Government positions must submit their nomination papers by June 22, while those contesting for Presidential and Parliamentary seats have until July 5, 2025, to file their papers. Notably, aspirants can contest in any constituency or ward, provided they collect at least 10 signatures from registered voters in that area.

The Malawi Electoral Commission has emphasized the importance of adhering to the electoral Code of Conduct during the campaign period.

To ensure a smooth nomination process, MEC advises candidates to request a pre-submission review of their documents to avoid disqualification due to errors
