Malawi businesses resume operations as traders comply with Electronic Invoicing System

By Burnett Munthali

Business is gradually returning to normal in Limbe, a commercial hub in Malawi, as merchants reopen their doors, marking the end of a week-long stay-away protest.

Traders across Malawi had closed their shops last week to protest the Malawi Revenue Authority’s (MRA) implementation of the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS), a new tax regime aimed at improving revenue collection.

Observations by local media Malawi on Monday morning revealed that indigenous Malawian-owned businesses were the first to reopen, followed by Malawians of Asian origin later in the mid-morning, indicating a gradual return to normalcy.

The resumption of trade suggests that merchants have moved toward compliance with the EIS requirement, which became effective on May 1, 2026, amidst concerns and resistance from some business owners.

The EIS is part of the MRA’s efforts to enhance tax compliance and increase revenue collection, but its implementation has been met with resistance from some traders who cite concerns about the system’s effectiveness and potential impact on their businesses.

The development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Malawi’s business community and the government’s efforts to improve revenue collection and implement tax reforms.

The reopening of businesses in Limbe is a positive sign, indicating a willingness among traders to comply with the new tax regime and work towards finding a mutually beneficial solution with the authorities.

As businesses resume operations, it remains to be seen how the EIS will be implemented and what impact it will have on Malawi’s economy and business environment.

The situation is being closely monitored by stakeholders, including business leaders, policymakers, and the general public, as Malawi seeks to navigate its economic challenges and promote sustainable growth.
