By Wadza Botomani

The Malawi Electoral Commission has issued a public warning regarding a piece of fake news that is currently in circulation. The commission has categorically denied a story suggesting that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) made an enquiry to change its running mate.

In a statement, the commission clarified that it has not received any such enquiry from the MCP. It also confirmed that the Times newspaper, which the fake story credits, did not publish any article on the matter. The commission has labeled the information as completely false.

This false news undermines public confidence and trust in the electoral process. The commission is urging all stakeholders and citizens to exercise caution and responsibility when sharing information on social media and other platforms. The public is advised to first verify the source of any information before forwarding or reposting it.

Official information from the commission is only disseminated through its press releases, media briefings, official website, and verified social media accounts. The commission has asked anyone in doubt to contact it directly for clarification, emphasizing that sharing only accurate and verified information is essential to protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
