The Malawi Human Rights Commission ( MHRC) has instituted an investigation into alleged physical assault of activist Joshua Chisa Mbele by some officers of Malawi Police Service.

In a brief statement shared on its Facebook Page on Sunday October 30,2022, the Human Rights body says Mbele’s assault raises violations of some rights such as Right to human dignity and personal liberty (Section 19) and Right to a fair and lawful detention (Section 42).

” However, the Commission will establish through its investigations what transpired.

“The Commission commenced its investigations today by visiting Mr Mbele and other demonstrators at Namitete police station” reads the brief statement in part.

It adds “The Commission expects cooperation from those in authority and any other relevant stakeholders as it continues with its investigations.”

Mbele was arrested during street protests against the government on Friday and he was temporarily detained at Area 3 Police Station before he was transferred to Nathenje Police Station on the outskirts of Lilongwe.

He was then transferred back to Area 3 on Saturday where he was allegedly physically assaulted.
