Malawi intensifies hygiene efforts ahead of rainy season

By Burnett Munthali

With the rainy season approaching, health authorities are stepping up calls for better hygiene and sanitation as communities face increased risks of communicable diseases.

The call comes as heavier rains can create conditions that allow diseases to spread more easily, particularly in areas where waste disposal, clean water and sanitation systems are inadequate.

Health officials are encouraging households, businesses and public institutions to keep their surroundings clean, dispose of waste properly and maintain basic hygiene practices.

The prevention efforts are particularly important in densely populated communities, where poor drainage and limited sanitation facilities can increase health risks during the rainy season.

Residents are also being urged to avoid practices that could contaminate water sources and to seek medical attention promptly when symptoms of infectious diseases develop.

Health officials have further stressed the importance of keeping marketplaces and other public spaces clean, as these areas attract large numbers of people every day.

The renewed hygiene campaign is aimed at reducing the spread of preventable diseases while encouraging communities to take greater responsibility for maintaining safe and healthy environments.

Health authorities say individual action, combined with proper waste management and community-led clean-up activities, can help minimise health risks during the rainy season.

As Malawi enters the wet season, sustained attention to hygiene and sanitation will remain important in protecting communities from preventable disease outbreaks.
