Malawi Paralympic chief honored with prestigious AUSC medal

Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) President, James Chiutsi, has been awarded the Medal of Honour by the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) for his outstanding contributions to sports development in Southern Africa.

The prestigious award was presented to Chiutsi during the opening ceremony of the Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia, on July 4, 2025.

The ceremony was graced by Namibian President Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who handed over the accolade to Chiutsi. According to AUSC Chief Executive Officer Stanley Mutoya, Chiutsi’s dedication to promoting youth engagement and regional sporting initiatives earned him this recognition.

Mutoya praised Chiutsi as a champion of Paralympic sports, highlighting his voluntary efforts in advancing the cause.

Chiutsi expressed humility and gratitude upon receiving the award, stating, “I did not expect this. I have been doing my voluntary work in promoting Paralympic sport because it serves many roles.” This recognition underscores Chiutsi’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and development in sports across Southern Africa.

The Region 5 Youth Games, currently underway in Windhoek, Namibia, brings together young athletes from member countries to compete in various disciplines, including new additions like Karate and Table Tennis. The event serves as a platform for nurturing sporting talent and promoting regional cooperation.
