The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) has disclosed that its current policy does not permit the provision of condoms and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to inmates.
The remarks follow the concerns by the Ministry of Health that the existing prison policy is limiting the delivery of some HIV prevention services in the country’s correctional facilities, particularly the provision of condoms and PrEP.
Malawi Prison Service spokesperson, Steve Charles Meke, says the current prison policy only allows the service to provide HIV counselling, screening, and health education.

However, Meke expressed optimism that the Malawi Prison Service will, in the future, begin providing additional HIV prevention services, including condoms and PrEP, once the necessary legal framework and policy guidelines have been developed and adopted.
